Although there are a lot of monster-filled maps, this, the Carta Marina of Olaus Magnus, may be the single most wonderful example, it was created as a sort of love-letter to a far removed homeland, and very nearly lost to history, to the point that the memory of it became intermixed with myth. Olaus Magnus was raised in Upsalla, Sweden in a devout Catholic family.

The map is centered on Scandia, which is shown in the largest size text on the map and placed on the middle of Sweden. The map covers the Nordic lands of "Svecia" and "Gothia", "Norvegia", Dania His Carta Marina that was published in 1539 was the largest map of any region of Europe at a huge 170 x 125 centimeters. It was impossible to print something that big at the time so Carta Marina was put together from nine separate parts printed on 55x40 centimeter woodcut blocks. It was the first large-scale map of any European region. The first time one looks at a color print of Olaus Magnus’ 1539 Carta Marina, the eyes scan the crowded landmass and fix on the creatures in the western part of the map.
